Hello all, and welcome to my fundraising page! 

My name is Alice and I am Paediatric Intensive Care Nurse. I was previously based in Starship Children's Hospital, New Zealand and I've just returned from a six month rural placement in the Emergency Department at Alice Springs Hospital - an extremely eye opening and rewarding experience.  

Now, to talk about something even more eye opening. Despite it being 2014, thousands of people across the globe still don't have access to the kind of healthcare that you and I take for granted. Think of the last time you went to the doctors/dentist/optometrist, for a common cold or a small ache. Now consider the next level of that, the specialists that we have access too so easily and take for granted so often. Each one of us has been effected in some way by an easily accessible health care service, be it personally or indirectly through tiers of family members and friends. Not everyone is so lucky. 

There are many, many places where this situation needs to be addressed, but ranked as having one of the lowest scoring health systems by the World Health Organisation, Cambodia on a whole is suffering, not only from non accessible health care, but from lack of education and resources. I've chosen to volunteer with Open Heart International, and will be utilizing my time, skills and knowledge to help do what I can to make any impact on the situation at hand. I'll be traveling with a team of specialized healthcare professionals, providing newborns, infants and children, with cardiac surgery they would otherwise go without. As a trained PICU nurse, I'll be based in ICU, caring for patients who will have just undergone life changing open heart surgery. 

Unfortunately, work like this doesn't come cheaply and we need all the help and support we can get to make this trip as successful as possible! By donating, you'll be providing much needed funds to support the project costs including supplies, travel expenses, and equipment. Taking large teams and lots of equipment around the world doesn't come cheaply, so every penny really will help make a difference.
